Case Study 3: Meek Mill - Monster

Music Video 3: Meek Mil – Monster

Synopsis: The synopsis of this video is based on a man and his friends showing off their wealth earned from spending countless hours aspiring to be the best in the music industry.

Type of Video: This video is performance based due to the fact that most of the video consists of dancing and showing off expensive clothing items.

Themes and Motifs: The key theme within this music video was definitely wealth. This is because the whole video includes props such as expensive clothing and expensive cars.

Representation of Artist: The representation of the artist within the music video is a man that is extremely proud of the transition within his life from being a reckless young teenager struggling to earn money, to an extremely wealthy young man with everything he dreamed of as a teenager.

Camera Angles/Effects: Within this music video, there were multiple camera angles used such as close shots, medium shots and long shots. In addition to this, panning and tracking were also used during the music video. The use of these angles were very effective during the video due to the fact that they illustrated the wealth of not only the main artist but all of his friends as well, hence suggesting the artist has helped all of his friends from his teenage years to be successful as well.

Lip Syncing: Furthermore, in the video it is noticeable that lip syncing is used due to the fact that the music video was filmed outside of a music studio.

Target Audience: The target audience for this music video is mainly for teenagers and young men aspiring to be wealthy people.

Ideas: Analysing this music video has given me the idea of potentially adding an element of performance to my music video.

  1. Add detail to this case study, use headings to breakdown the technical elements of camera, mise-en-scene and editing. Rather than just list shots seen analyse how and where they have been used. More on genre and themes of wealth too and linking to own video.
